Rulers of Sweden is a concise and lucid survey of Swedish monarchs, from Erik the Victorious in the tenth century up to the present king, Carl XVI Gustaf. The author, Bengt Liljegren, has taken a slightly irreverent approach to the rulers, without foregoing historical correctness.

In the rich portrait gallery we find Edmund the Old, Ragnvald Round Head, Erik the Lisping and Lame, Margareta, Ulrika Eleonora and many more. Rulers of Sweden works equally well as a handy reference book and as pure entertainment. Bengt Liljegren succeeds in painting brief but vivid pen-portraits of the men (and occasional women) who have reigned in Sweden since the Viking Age. In other words, the book opens the door to Swedish history.

Bengt Liljegren, born in 1961, is a lecturer and historian who also works as a critic for the newspaper Sydsvenska Dagbladet.

He has previously enjoyed great success with two critically acclaimed books about King Charles XII of Sweden, Karl XII i Lund (1999) and Karl XII: En biografi (2000).
